INGREDIENTS OVERVIEW

Let's delve into a few key ingredients. For a more in-depth understanding, consider checking out our blog post: "Baby Formula Ingredients: What’s in European Formula?" It provides detailed information that you might find intriguing.

  • PRE- AND PROBIOTICS

These little wonders are like special treats for the good gut bugs, just like what probiotics are. And guess what? They're already present in breast milk! Prebiotics don't really get digested themselves, but they work their magic by helping those probiotics grow strong. This can actually make your baby's tummy bugs more similar to those of breastfed babies – how cool is that? So, when you're looking at different baby formulas, keep an eye out for familiar names like Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) or Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) on the ingredient list.

Now, onto our pals, probiotics! These friendly bacteria play a big role in your baby's healthy tummy. They can give your baby's immune system a little boost, maybe even help with colic and keep eczema at bay. When you're checking out formula options, make sure you spot names like Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium on that ingredients list.

  • SOY

Early in life, soy is a bit problematic. It’s used as an emulsifier and to add protein. There are two concerns: soy is a frequent allergen, and it contains phytoestrogens, chemicals that act like estrogen in your baby’s body. Avoiding soy is better until the baby is completely off formula, but definitely in the first six months.

  • PALM OIL

Palm oil is used as fat in baby formula. It adds calories and palmitic and oleic acids, both of which are vital to your baby’s growth, especially in the brain. Fats are vital to growing babies. Never cut out fat or put your baby on a diet without specific instructions from your pediatrician. Most fats, especially those in the formula, are very good for babies.

  • WHEY

This is a liquid leftover from the process of making cheese. Whey is mostly lactose, providing sugars and energy to the baby, It also contains some protein. Whey should avoid it for babies that are lactose intolerant.

  • OMEGA-3 AND 6

These are vital fatty acids used for the construction of cells in the body. Most formulas get their fatty acids from fish oil, but it’s also derived from nuts, eggs, and more. This is a more recently included ingredient that might not be necessary, but breast milk contains essential fatty acids. Formula makers add it to guarantee that babies get the best nutrition possible.

  • MALTODEXTRIN

This is an ingredient derived from plants that add sweetness and is used as a thickener. Many people don’t like it because it’s an “artificial” sweetener, but the companies use it because it’s organic and makes formula smoother and more palatable.

  • LACTOSE

Lactose stands as the special natural sugar in breast milk. This makes Lactose-focused formulas so much like breast milk, making them a solid choice. Little ones create something called lactase that helps them easily soak in Lactose.

Apart from this, Lactose has a much gentler impact on blood sugar compared to sugary stuff, and it even helps in taking in calcium, which is great for building strong tummies and good gut buddies, among other benefits.

To sum it up, going with a Lactose-centered formula might just be the big key to finding the right one. When you're scanning those labels, remember that lactose is what's mainly in cow’s milk, sometimes listed as “organic cow’s milk” or “organic skimmed milk”. And hey, these Lactose-based formulas usually come from Europe.
